While dredging through my archives I came across this picture so I thought folks might have fun over the holidays trying to figure out something about it. Some of you might even recognise it.

What can you figure out about it?

Looks like a part of the front piece of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble CD Greatest Hits. A Decca Compilation circa 2001. As to the make model of the instruments I do not have a clue.

Compliments of the season

Trombone: Conn 8H. Definitely a Philip Jones cover (I own it); the title is Just Brass, released in 1970. The pensive chap hiding behind Fletcher's Holton is, I believe, Elgar Howarth.

Yes!! This is from the 1970 LP cover. I had not realised that the same picture was used on the more recent CD cover.

Listening to this LP in the early 70's was the first time I had ever heard a brass quintet and I remember being hooked on that genre as a result :). I just got one of those USB turntables for Christmas so am digging out all my old LPs to digitise - this was one of the first on my list to do.

OK. I'll ask since I've always wondered . Is that guy REALLY that tall, or am I seeing some kind of optical illusion? :?:

Are you talking about the guy in the brown shirt? I think that is John Wilbraham and I recall that he was, indeed, a very large man. He sure could blow the heck out of a trumpet.

As an aside (picking up on a previous "viola" thread) a story was told about him and the back-desk viola player. One day at rehearsal the viola player turned to Wilbraham behind him and snarled, "Can’t you play a bit quieter, you’re giving me a headache?"

"If only you had practised more," he replied, "you would be sitting a bit nearer the front."

Considering the position of the hands of the guy to his right (viewer's left), even without knowing anything about the guy or the album/cd cover, it's clear he's squatting down.
