Not many people know this piece, as it has been out of print for 10 years.

For those of you who do know it. Would you "deem" this piece acceptable for a college audition?

Really, Has no one ever heard of it or played it before?

It was written by and premiered by R. Winston Morris.

I have a recording and have performed it a couple of times. I like the piece, but personally would not use it on an audition. It would probably be better to do something a little more tuneful. If you do choose to use it for an audition, then I suggest you make it as musical as possible. Good Luck.

I actually won a Concerto Competition back in my college days using this piece. I needed to play a work for tuba and wind ensemble and this was the piece my teacher suggested. To be honest, I did not really like the piece very much and consequently opted to play the Gregson at the performance instead, with the conductor's blessing. I don't think the Ross necessarily gives the prospective undergrad student a fair chance to shine, as Ross' musical language is fairly advanced...well beyond most high school players' ears. My persoanl feeling is that audition solos, especially if the audition is a cappella, should be enjoyable to listen to without accompaniment for both auditionee and auditioner. I'm not so sure this piece fits the bill.

I think something more like the Bach/Bell - Air & Bourree or a Handel Sonata would work better as this gives the student a chance to really show his/her capabilities both technically and musically with music they can digest much more easily.

My thoughts, FWIW.
