I saw that as well. He's one of my chief inspirations for anything musical. What a sound!

A German colleague told me last summer that Hilgers intended to focus more on teaching and conducting. According to the schedule on his homepage he still does some soloing, so he has certainly not stopped playing altogether. He is also still listed as an orchestra member, along with Halwax, on the Wiener Staatsoper site.

The current tuba player for German brass is now Stefan Ambrosius, tuba player for the Bayerische Staatsoper. He is also my teacher at Stuttgart, and former student of Stefan Heimann. Heimann is the teacher in Stuttgart as well, and tubist of the Baden-Wurttembergische Staatsoper in Stuttgart.
