I believe one reason is that the VW is the first concerto written for our instrument by someone who is considered a "major" composer. Just what I've heard....

I don't think that the VW Tuba concerto is actually the first one. It is however considered to be the first serious tuba concerto. One of the first essential pieces for the tubist's repertoire.
