14 Stolen Sousaphones

North Carolina Central University has had 14 sousaphones stolen in multiple thefts going back to November.

Hard to see how they could easily be sold, but there is a reward.

Reading the article, I can't tell if they were plastic or metal souzies. However, I've noticed that the trend in field bands seems to be to go back to metal instruments so I'm guessing that they were metal.
Hope for the sake of the band and those souzies what I'm about to say isn't true: they could be going to scrap metal. Anything made of metal can be and is taken, flattened and sold for scrap. Copper especially (I think some TubeNetters were complaining about this) but metal in general can be turned into cash quickly. Run over a souzy a dozen or so times with a car or truck, sell it and you have some money for another's day's drugs.

Dunno. Sounds like they took other stuff, too, and there wasn't much scap value in that stuff.

I honestly cannot imagine fourteen sousas being stolen from the university. How many of the things did they have in the first place? It seems to me that this just about HAS to be the work of someone who routinely had access to them.
Does anyone have a list of the makes, models, and serial numbers?
