Does anyone know of a collapsible, or telescoping tuba mute on the market? Something that would sound decent and fit in a suitcase.

with a little help from my friends, I'm workin' on it. Will fit in the case or gig bag, serve as a standard mute and also serve as a practice mute. I'll keep you posted.

These are great mutes - and yes, they do store in the bell. Only problem is that they are a bit heavy, but tuba players don't seem to mind that too much.

While you're at it.....how about a tuba stand for "leaners?" I've played a number of Eb tubas I liked, but they were all "leaners" needing continuing effort to hold them at the proper angle. Neither my CC nor my F requires this kind of effort; the CC sits nicely on the chair and the F sits nicely on my thighs. I guess maybe Eb tubas aren't "nice?" Hmmmm!!

Maybe TubaDome would be interested in becoming a dealer. Roger?

I talked with Mr. Schlipf last year at ITEC and he was all for it. The biggest problem is that, since all his mutes are basically custom made, it makes it difficult to build up stock. They also tend to be a bit on the heavy side, though extremely well designed and well thought out. I don't see an issue with an F tuba mute, thought the 6/4 one if toyed with in Budapest was a bit awkward for faster changes and might damage the horn if you got careless.

One of the biggest problems we face as tuba players is that very few bell flares are the same. This requires adjustable systems to be built in and this will usually affect the way the mute performs. The Balu mutes have the adjustability (I own one) and they are well in tune and sound good, though you can't push it bright to change the "color" the way a trumpet mute does. The Balu's Make it sound like a soft tuba, but what does a metal mute in a trumpet do when pushed a bit? You gain a little edge and a new sound and a new "color". In the perfect world, I would want it all. Can we do it? Time will tell.

I had a trumpet player friend who got one of those little bottles of Perrier water and pt corks on it. What a GREAT and unique sound - especially when it hit the floor.

The Schlipf mutes are a great product and they play very well in tune. I really love some of the innovations he's brought to the design.

get one of these for your leaner horn. It's the hercules stand and it is set up for leaners.

what I wanna find is a stand that will hold a tuba up high enough for playing while standing or at least sitting on a tall stool. Any suggestions? (the Hercules is too low, the Wengers too expensive! :( )

K&M make a tall (standing while playing) version of their stand.
