Our quintet just got a gig for Palm Sunday. Anybody have a suggestion for music? How about something with choir and/or organ? We have some pieces for Easter, but they don’t fit for Palm Sunday.

Now that would seem to call not for the palm, but the back of the hand(slap).

Anything with the word "Hosanna" in the title.

A few suggestions:

Stephen Adams, The Holy City;
L. van Beethoven, Hallelujah Chorus from Christ on the Mount of Olives;
G. Carissimi, Plorate Filii Israel;
Jean-Baptiste Faure, The Palms;
G. F. Handel, Awake the Trumpet's Lofty Sound
______, Tochter Zion;
J. M. Neale, All Glory Laud and Honor;
Camille Saint-Säens, Tollite Hostias
Georg Vogler, Hosianna Davids Sohn

These are all available with or without choir and/or organ.

I suspect that "Sing Hosannah," aka "Give Me Oil in My Lamp[/i] would NOT be appropriate.

Well, true. Never mind.

Having to wether an ice storm home bound for two days sometimes vents in the most unexpected places.

My first comment was probably inappropriate as well.

Great selections above, however.

"I wanna hold your hand..."

or

"He's got the whole world, in his hand"

Sorry I couldn't resist.

AKBrasspress.com sells an arrangement of Faures "The Palms," which I wrote just for this occasion/purpose.

I have arranged "Hosanna!" by Berlioz for brass quintet and organ. Like you, our quintet needed music for Palm Sunday and it is hard to find. "Hosanna!" is from the Berlioz Requiem. The Hosanna theme is set as a fugue with a quiet, hymn-like Andante in the middle and then a return of the fugal Hosanna. Except for the Andante, it is bright and loud and dramatic - classic Berlioz. We have also performed this for Easter.

You can see a sample page and listen to a sample of the arrangememt at www.dorm40music.com. Just search under SCORES by title (Hosanna) or composer (Berlioz).

That seems sort of odd to me. I frequently do church gigs and they ALWAYS tell us what to play. Doesn't the church have some sort of 'director of music'?

That's because they know what you "musician-types" would pick, if left to your own devices. Too Fat Hosanna Polka... They aren't taking any chances with the congregation! :shock: :wink:

Usually when we play a church gig, we will be asked to play 2 or 3 pieces as prelude to the service or postulde after the service or perhaps an offertory piece. For those situtations we are usually free to pick something appropriate. Someimtes they will offer suggestions as to the style or title of the piece.

The director picks the anthem which usually includes brass accompaniment or an organ and brass piece. Also the hymns of the day are picked and we will accompany them, usually reading out of the hymnal, unless there is a special arrangement the director is using.

I'll meet with the director early next week. She wanted me to bring any "Palm Sunday" stuff we had in our book. We only have a Moravian Hosanna that I arranged last year. But like any other choral work transcribed for quintet, without the text to give the music context, it is another pretty piece. I guess I could pull out any old obscure baroque piece and call it Hosanna or Triumphal Entry and go with that. I think she has some two choir hosanna type pieces that we can arrange for choir and brass. I’ll have to hunt up some of these pieces and be ready for next year. Maybe I'll find that Hosanna polka
