VW Concerto w/ String Quartet?

Post by josh_kaprun »

Does anybody know if there is an arrangement of the Vaughn Williams Concerto that is set with a String Quartet/Quintet accompaniment? I'm playing this piece for my senior recital in a few months and think that it would be really cool to do it with strings backing me up.

a few months is more than enough time to do an arrangement yourself. I am finishing up a brass quintet arrangement of the 2nd movement to test out of my music technology course. It didn't take much time at all, just sit down with a cd of it with orchestra and a study score and do it yourself. Always a rewarding way to do things.

When in doubt, check the tuba source book?

Hey Oneba, I'm interested in how that 2nd mvt arrangement works out. It's always sounded like a great idea to me, but I always thought it would be way too much for the trpts to play that solidly for a whole 5 minutes or so. You know how they are.

I'll let you know when I'm finished, its coming out pretty well. I have a bit of a long term timeline.. but I'll probably get on it sooner. I picked it because it stands alone really well and is IMO a beautiful piece of music all by itself. I've definitely had a bit of difficulty trying to keep endurance in mind, and also not giving all of the melody to the tuba.. as it is supposed to be an original arrangement, I can't just copy paste the solo line. The problem with that is I have played it and heard it so much that in my head its hard to hear anything but tuba.

Sorry this has nothing to do with the original post. I think a string 4/5tet is a much more appropriate setting for the accomp. than brass quintet, and should be relatively easy to do if you can't track down an arrangement.
