Once again it's time for the United States Navy Band's annual tour. This year we’ll be on the road from 15 February to 11 March, starting from Washington D.C. and heading west. You can find the dates, cities, and specific venues here:
http://www.navyband.navy.mil/tourcb.shtml
As an added bonus, there is also a link to let you know the individual pieces on any given concert: pick the concert with the programming you like best, or better still, chose two dates to hear both!
As always, admission is free, but very often tickets are required as crowds can often overwhelm the available seating. Check with the local sponsor about tickets.
Essential personnel (to this board, anyway) are Roger Behrend and Bryce Edwards, euphonium; Karl Hovey and James Hicks, tuba. Make sure you come up and say “hello,â€

Great, Karl-------you are finally coming to California. It's a long drive from my place down to Bakersfield, but I'll be there to listen to your terrific band. It's been many years, but I think I remember that the performance site down there is nice. It's a huge high school auditorium.
Quick bump...

Howdy from the road,
Wanted everyone to know that, as far as the band is concerned, we're off to a great start, with large and enthusiastic crowds at every venue.
Personally, things could be better as in Mountain Grove I was laid low by a kidney stone! Only 2mm in diameter, the little devil caused excruciating pain. A CAT scan revealed it to be close to passing, so I was given some serious pain meds (vicodan) and sent on my way.
That was three days ago, and the %$%$!! thing still hasn't passed!
Anyone know any help for this condition before I lose what little of my mind is left?! I've been pounding fluids and meds to no avail...
A reminder: you can check out our daily blog by going to the tour schedule on our website...
http://www.navyband.navy.mil/tourcb.shtml
... and clicking on the date. (Fair warning: on at least one of the dates there is a photo of me in all my non-glory).
Westward Ho!

I have heard the modern treatment for this condition is to sit you in a tub of water and pulverize the kidney stones with ultrasound. You still have to pass the small pieces so the process is not painless.
Sorry you are having this trouble on what could have been a fun road trip.

It was a pleasure to have you at Gardner edgerton high school Friday night. The concert was great, and the kids and community were thrilled. Sorry to hear about 'the stones', I can't think of much worse than being sick on tour...
thanks again for a great show!

The Stones Tour

And yea, verily, it came to Pass!
Yes, I'm relatively free of pain as I type because the Stone has magically disappeared!
Unfortunately it did some damage on the way, so I’m still on pain meds and antibiotics.
Those of you who attended the concerts in Gardner and Mountain Grove got to hear James Hicks carry the tuba load solo: and of course he was great! Today is Salinas, Kansas, a 3:00 p.m. matinee, and the tuba section should be back at full strength.
As an aside, I had my first real meal in 4 days last night at an incredible barbecue place in Kansas City, Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbecue.
Oh, Man!
Just walking in the door had all in our party (10) thinking one thing: GIVE FOOD NOW. Nothing like the aroma of real hickory BBQ. The freaking beans were a full meal in themselves: Served in a small bowl, the flavors were so rich, so broad and robust, with chunks of meat and a heavenly flavors, that everyone who tried them's first reaction was "Wow!" followed by immediately ordering their own serving.
As for the meats, everyone had various favorites, but there seemed to be universal acclaim for the pork spare ribs.
Who knows what musical and culinary adventures await down the road? Come see!

Unfortunately, Jack Stack isn't the best IMO.
The Fiorella family used to have a place (in fact, the original Jack Stack was called) The Smoke Stack. A joint, not a 'restaurant'.
Now, Arthur Bryant's, the original at 18th and Brooklyn, THAT'S a KC barbecue joint. LC's...even Gates, which is almost a restaurant but not quite...
Next time, Karl, holler and I'll get you some REAL KC Barbecue!

But, Karl, I didn't even see your durn OP until yesterday...a day late at least! I'm really sorry...but not as sorry as you, for missing that meal!

Today's concert

Just finished a fun concert in Great Bend, Kansas, at Barton Community College.
One of the traditions the Navy Band really enjoys is having a select group of outstanding high school players join us on stage. It is (sadly) rare that we get a tuba player, but today we had a great one: Rachel Wysong from Larned High School. She did a super job on Sousa's "Washington Post" and got to shake hands and have a photo op with our Commanding Officer, CAPT George Thompson. Maybe she'll show up on the band's official blog!
Tomorrow, Colby, the day after, Denver. I know there are great places to ride a bike in Denver, but I need input for great eats!

The 007 arrangement is an in-house Navy Band arrangement making its debut on this year's tour, so there is no sound file or recording of the piece yet...
As for the blog, if you go to the Navy Band's website and click on the National Tours link, you should see the entire Concert Band's tour:
http://www.navyband.navy.mil/tourcb.shtml
If you then click on a
date (i.e., 2/24, etc), the band's official blog will appear, and you can scroll through the various dates and venues.
Hope this clarifies!

Denver!

Last night the band played a great concert at King Center for the Performing Arts. Small, but acoustically wonderful hall, enthusiastic crowd, and the interesting experience of being only one of several performances running concurrently. We were bumping into actors running back and forth from makeup to the stage, and all the green room speakers were playing audio from a play in another part of the building!
Afterwards, got to meet some fellow tuba players and Tubenetters. Chuck Huffman (forgive any misspellings) and some folks from a Denver concert band stuck around to say hi and inquire about my health: all better, thanks! Later, James, Bryce and I met with U of C tuba prof Mike Dunn and some of his students (Ed, Eric, Travis, and Noel? forgive my old-guy memory) for some tall tales and root beers at the local watering hole.
Good concert, good people, good times: a definite tour highlight!
And Mr. Oppenheim, you've got some 'splainin' to do...

I attended the concert in Denver last night and thoroughly enjoyed it!, as did the multitude of my band friends who also attended.
My wife is a 007 fan and thought the Shaken, Not Stirred rocked!!
I particularly enjoyed Shosti's Festive Overture. It is one of my favorites to play on euph. We are doing it at our next Denver Concert Band concert.
A truly memborable experience. If the US Navy Band is coming to a town near you, by all means don't miss it!
Karl, I enjoyed our chit-chat after the concert. Sorry I couldn't suggest a bike ride to you, I ride a stationary bike in the basement
Great job sailors,
Chuck Hoffman (spelling error forgiven)
