For those of you wondering whatever happened to this horn for sale last year, it's slowly coming together. My buddy who bought it asked me to post some pics, so here goes. Enjoy

Rob, George McCraken is meticulously restoring and building this horn. After the rotors (which he turned himself on the lathe) are fitted and lapped in, he will reassemble the horn and begin work on the linkages. He's got diagrams of the period linkages, so the horn will look factory original. We hope to have this done by next Jan to show people at the DC conference.

After seeing how this horn is coming together, I wish there were more classic rotaries too.

Here is the horn mostly together. George McCracken has been putting this together. Since this pic was taken, the slides are together and valves in place. George wants to replate them to have even more compression. After that the leadpipe and paddles will be installed and we should have something playable. Can't wait.

Any chance that Kanstul might do this? Or will they crack into the 6/4 BAT market next?

This is a really friggin cool tuba. If I could buy rotary AND American-made, that'd be cool as hell.

I completely agree with Bort. Someone that has either this horn or one of the other Geibs needs to get in touch with Kanstul and see if they would be interested in bringing this classic back. I know that there would be a market for well-made, rotary American tubas. They could probably do a version in BBb and CC and have a large market base. I put it like this, if Kanstul were to release a Geib copy in BBb, I would buy one.

When I think of this horn.... I think of the recording of NY Phil with Warren Deck playing on The Ride. An absolutely huge and powerful sound....which 95% was Deck, but that shows what a horn like that can really do.

But, anyways, it is great to see another old classic being restored and readied to be played once again!! Thanks for keeping us updated on this particular Geib Conn.

Provided they get the taper right.... Sorry to say this, but the tapers on both the Kanstul original and Kanstul/York horns just seems wrong to me....

I don't know the York or Kanstul tubas very well, but regardless of whether the taper is "wrong" or not, it seems like it still turned out ok.

This is going to be an awesome tuba when it's completed.

Was the original finish a satin silver or polished silver?

Also, have got some pictures before it was disassembled?
