student issues
Through middle and early high school, I am continually amazed by the number of students who come without even a working knowledge of the bass staff; i.e. note names, fingerings, etc. Surprisingly, many of them can play pretty decently; we just can't have a meaningful musical discussion without a lot of sign language. I have had to assign a level 1 note speller to high school players more than once.

I’ve been teaching instrumental music in New Jersey full time for over 20 years and was teaching tuba before that. Currently I teach tuba at William Paterson University, (a state university) where some students come in with little real training in tuba.
