Through middle and early high school, I am continually amazed by the number of students who come without even a working knowledge of the bass staff; i.e. note names, fingerings, etc. Surprisingly, many of them can play pretty decently; we just can't have a meaningful musical discussion without a lot of sign language. I have had to assign a level 1 note speller to high school players more than once.

I’ve been teaching instrumental music in New Jersey full time for over 20 years and was teaching tuba before that. Currently I teach tuba at William Paterson University, (a state university) where some students come in with little real training in tuba.

Elephant covered it quite well re rhythm, scales and reading. Proper subdivision of dotted rhythms, the concept of “steady eighthsâ€
