I'm looking closely at one now, and while lots of folks have weighed in over there years here on the pros and cons (mostly the former) on Eb Bessons in various forms, there's not alot of info on the older Willson 3+1 compensating Ebs.

I'm told they are similar to the Bessons of similar vintage but they are a little "weightier" and consequently gain a bit of core to the center of their sound.

Would anyone be able to enlighten me on this :?:

By the way - this concerns TUBAS, not euphs...

They are not very similar to the Besson/Booseys. The same adjectives you'd use to describe the difference in their euphs would match the description of their Ebs. Playable, bigger and darker than a Besson, but not as rich as a Besson, and perhaps missing a few pounds of torque on the loud side...

Spot on JC, that's exactly it.

Ideal if you want to get away from the trad Besson sound, with a different voice for orch or band work.
