I have a Denis Wick and really like it. The only other mute I've used (or heard used) is the HB and it just didn't compare in sound. Mainly I have it because I got a good deal on it.

For a metal mute, you really can't beat the Denis Wick. For a fibre mute, I have used and really like my NP Griffith. Great feel and intonation. I hear the Wick practice mute is quite nice as well.

Homemade mute: cheap, effective, lightweight, compact (stores in bell), easily "tuned" to playing characteristics of your horn

1 liter Gatorade/Powerade bottle
duct tape
soldering iron

My $.02,

The best mute I have ever used is a Schlipf mute.

PROS: Added cup mute, great metal construction, blow better in tune than the WICK while still having a metalic sound

CONS: You can't buy them in the US, have to buy from Austria - and they're about $300 plus shipping.

I've used my Denis Wick exclusively. Never looked for another since I got it - perfect in every way for me.
