Nice shot of what appears to be John Van Houten with one of the dreaded tuba mutes clogging up his bell!

Looks more like a Firebird.

I'll vote for the 181. Looks too big to be a Firebird.

It was of Sammy Davis Jr. standing next to me and a tuba at the Fischer Bldg Sound Studios in Detroit. He was recording "Hello Detroit" and I played on it (that and a really crappy arrangement of Battle Hymn of the Republic...). In the picture's perspective, it looked like I could have used him as a tuba mute. He was a tiny little guy...
Can't find the picture... crap. I've moved several times since. I *think* I was the youngest guy on the band by about 20+ years.
That is awesome. Playing with him must have been amazing. Little guy, but damn what a great big voice.

Also, if anyone has the 2 disc edition of the Incredibles, there is a special feature about the music featuring footage of the recording session. Tommy Johnson on his Gronitz PCK and John VanHouten on his rotary Culbertson Neptune. What a kicking soundtrack that is!

The Tuba John Van Houten was using in this photo is a Miraphone 181 valve F tuba and he sold that tuba to one of my friends. He now plays on a firebird.

Strange! I can clearly see the Neptune engraving on the bell, but that 5th valve slide is nothing like I have ever seen on a Neptune
Is that a custom flat two tone 5th valve slide fitted?
