Tuba players in China ?

Post by The Deep End »

Does anyone know of any English speaking tubists in China ?
How many full-time symphony orchestras are there over there now ? Would be very interested to know what the scene is like there with their new found love of all things western !

i was over there in late november and met only two tuba players. one spoke a little bit of english and played a Mira 191 and the other UNDERSTOOD a little and played a rotary PT20. both were great players and were about 18-19. they were enrolled in school at the children's palace. we didn't get to see any major symphonies but these were just as good. it was a brass quintet and a tuba/euph quartet where most of their music WAS ARRANGED BY THEIR 16 YEAR OLD 1ST EUPH! it was quite a sight.

The man in action there is Micky Wrobleski. He plays in the Beijing Symphony and has been very proactive in getting the right things to happen in China. As a foreigner, he has done alot for that orchestra, for the composers within that country's borders and for young tuba players in that country. He has given tuba recitals, written alot of music for tuba and brass ensemble, and has participated in many recordings coming from there. In his "spare" time, he started a large brass ensemble within Beijing and, in the short time he has been there, he is fluent in the language and is about a good a representative for the tuba as I could imagine. The only thing that surpasses his energy is his humility. China is a challenging country. By being there, Micky is truly making a difference for all of us. Gene Pokorny

I went over there in 2005 with my Youth Orchestra. I met one tubist. He was a high school student. He was quite good, and so was his school orchestra. All I can tell you is that there aren't many tubists over there.
