Blakeslee
I saw Blaskeslee with the concertgebow twice, once in Amsterdam around 2001 and once at Newark's great NJ PAC a year later. Both times were Mahler (2nd symphony at NJ PAC and if I recall correctly the 5th in Amsterdam). What a fantastic player- great power when needed, but always blended well with the section. His loss was a great one for the music community.

Hey Uncle Beer, so Blaskeslee was with the orchestra since the 60s?? He certainly wasn't the player I saw/heard/met in 1981 or so. That guy was distinctively German (I sure don't remember his name, if I ever knew it) and the only real communication we could have was that I was also a tuba player, and he played a B&S F on the whole concert. (Mahler 1; Die Meistersinger as an encore). Whoever that was, that was a great player too. The age would seem about right, though.
