This is the "famous" John Fletcher recording of the VW concerto

I agree. The Andre Previn is the best version readily available. Fletcher plays the original version (most printed versions have typos and are lacking certain notes, esp. in the cadenza). The orchestra is tight and Previn has a good feel for Vaughn-Williams. The Patrick Herald version is just OK, but is a better recording of the band.

There's a recording of Arnold Jacobs playing the VW with the Chicago Symphony. The name of the CD is "The Chicago Principal - First Chair Soloists play famous Concertos".

Sorry, but I have to say the best recording thus far is played by Michael Lind on his Virtuoso Tuba album. It feels migh lighter and I prefer his style to Fletcher's for the RVW. I have even been told that Fletcher did not even like his recording, because he did not have time to prepare for it! Correct me if I am wrong, but I got this information from a reliable source.

For those that know the piece (and orchestra parts) well, there are some serious ensemble issues, among other things in this recording.

There are many better overall recordings of this piece than the Jacobs one.

The VW is being played in Tucson by Mark Nelson in January 2005, if I remember correctly. With the Catalina Chamber Orhcestra, which is a semi-pro group. I certainly plan to attend and be in the cheering section. I suppose I could volunteer to be in the violin section for that performance, and get closer to the action.
