Hallo All,
Thought you might like to see some pics from my trip to the Frankfurt Musikmesse. This is an incredibly large music show with a very large selection of tuba makers from Europe, etc.
Sorry the pics are not very good. It was very crowded and difficult to get good pics and there was not enough time to photograph everything, but you can at least get a taste of the fun.

Simply marvelous. Can you explain the rotary valve block with the extra set of pipes?

Yes, These are a set of Double Valves with a fifth change valve like what you would see on most french horns, but intended for a tuba. i was told that Alexander still uses these for some of their F/BBb double tubas.

What a fantastic set of pics. Made my mouth water. Thanks for going to the trouble to post these. That Jupiter looked interesting, is that their new concert BBb model?

I believe that is the lacquered version of the Jupiter 584. I can only assume that the 584 is the CC version of the 582 (same numbers, etc.).

Wow. The MW Kronos F Tuba looks like quite an interesting horn.

Those cimbassi are examples of an F and BBb, I take it; the BBb being the one with the larger, double wrap in the bell section?

Hopefully I can answer a few questions....
The MW Kronos (from what I was told by the Schargel sp? sales rep. who are marketing the horn) is being made for the tubist in the Mnozil Brass and like the other instruments in this amazing group, it is meant to look a bit 'special'. I may have remembered wrong, but I believe the price was between 11-12K euro.

The Jupiter was definitely their new CC tuba..100% sure:)

The Cimbassos were mostly in F, but the big Rudy BBb was great fun. I have no idea what music you would play with it, but when you are having a bad day, nothing will cheer you up more than playing on a BBb cimbasso.

I found most of the instruments I played to have good qualities, but I found the B&S JBL F tuba and the Thor CC tuba to be the best there. There were nine of us together on this trip and we agreed almost 100%, so it's not just my opinion;)

I played Willy C's (of mnozil brass) F tuba last year when it was a prototype. Seriously one of the best i've ever played. It looks like they have changed the design quite a bit since september last year. Particularly the left hand valve section.

I'm pretty sure it was manufactured by Schargl, does this mean MW are mass producing it?

I visited Frankfurt too. Played everything that looked like a tuba or euphonium.

Best instruments I tried:

Willson 3100 FA-5 BBb
Piston valves worked great, huge sound and very good control.
This one is my favourite on the Frankfurt Messe.

Rudolf Meinl BBb 6/4
Great sound, great valves, but I still prefer piston valves over rotary. Great price too (16000EUR)

The new Besson 967 and 2052 were very, very good.

I LOVE the concept! A front valved euphonium with a 3+1 valve arrangement! I've always liked front facing valves, seemed like an ergonomic improvement over the top facing valves for me, except when I had to engage the 4th valve with combinations of the others. This horn takes care of that problem. Now if they made this horn with pistons instead of rotors, I would probably buy it.

There is a mouthpiece in the Bruno Tilz mouthpiece display that has a blank shape that I have not seen before; if you have any info, I'd appreciate your sharing. (I may just end up sending them an email, but...)

Also, how was the Kronos F prototype? Looks very innovative.

hey Chris,

Most of the Tilz mouthpieces in the pictures are Walter Hilgars models and I believe the others are the Daum or Pröpper models.

We found the Kronos to not have enough power in the sound, especially in the lower register. Also, there were some intonation problems that would keep me from buying the horn.
However, the sound was very "pretty/pure" and the valves were very fast. I prefered the JBL B&S F
