Tell me about that bad boy! It looks great! With the 4th valve, it should have a great sounding bottom end.

It is a 1921 Conn 40K rebuilt by Harv. serial #189XXX. He took it apart, took out all the dents, chem. cleaned/dip, buffed, polished and gave it new lacquer. It plays brand new. 1 word to describe its tone. WOW. It is not only the best sousa ive played, it is one of the best tubas in general I have played. It takes less air than a 20K because of the standard stroke valves. It only weighs a little over 30 lbs which isn't as heavy as I thought it would be. I can pop out peddles LOUD. Not just loud I'm talkin LOUDDD. The high notes come out easily too. easier than on my 20J. If you ever see an old Conn sousaphone grand for sale, GET IT. You won't regret it. Also I did not know that the bell collars on the old big bore Conn sousas were different than the 2XJ collars. I tried swapping bells with my 20J and the 40K bell was too big! it wouldn't fit in the hole and actually almost fit OVER the 20J collar. That was suprising to me.

This question has probably been dealt with previously, but I couldn't find the answer by searching TubeNet nor the Conn Loyalist site:

What are the bell diameters, collar diameters, bore sizes, etc. on the 40K Sousaphone Grand and the 48K Sousaphone Grand Jumbo?

The 38K and 40K had 24" inch bells, which were discontinued and replaced by the 20K and 24K which had 26" inch bells. All were .734 bore, and had somewhere around 7 1/2" bell collars. ( I say somewhere around 7 1/2" because you can swap bells with a 20K to a 20J with no problem, but I recently discovered the 38K and 40K had slightly larger bell collars..about 1/4" to 1/2" inch bigger than the 20k). The Jumbos had either 26" or 28" inch bells with I think 9 1/2" wide bell collars. not sure of bore size, either .734 or .773

You could also get the 38K and 40K with 26 inch bells later on down the line.

My 40K has a 26 inch bell, 7 1/8 inch collar.

The piston buttons are different - smaller, pearl caps - than our new member of the family here.
