Which tuba does HoJo play on this photo?

The photo is part of Howard Johnson’s site and is not in a .jpg format, which may be linked to:

This tuba has 4 top action pistons. Not an unknown set-up. But there are traits similar to compensating tubas. And compensating tubas with 4 top action pistons are very rare. I only have seen one, which was a Besson 3 valve BBb comper having a 4th top action valve added, but not involved in the compensating system.

Meinl Weston doesn’t provide a high resolution photo of their HoJo model BBb. Yet I don’t see any comp loops on this photo like on the photo causing my original asking.

Looking closely at the photo, id does appear to be a compensating design, but the 4th "valve" casing isn't in line with the first 3, the "stem" extends down past them.

The valve casing, if there is one, is below the crop of the photo; otherwise it could be a slide kicker of a sort.

The tuba in the photo is his old Boosey (pre-Hawkes) in F. It's a 3+1 compensating instrument. Howard had a technician construct a special linkage so he could work the 4th valve with his right pinky, as on his Mahillons. That's the setup that he prefers. I saw it up close and talked with him about it at Bill Troiano's HH Tubaday on Long Island a few years ago.

Thank you very much for this information!

I like my observations being consistent with my knowledge. This tuba has a very non-standard set-up, which however is consistent with HoJo’s other low brass instruments.

I had the honor of trying out this tuba in '96 when the Mingus band came to Cleveland. I loaned the Bass Bone player my Eb, and HoJo played this thing, as well as Bari. The loan earned me the chance to try it.

When I played it, my buddy's eyes shot out like a cartoon characters, as did mine. This is an EXCEPTIONAL tuba. I would even go as far as to call it the best F I've aver played. I pray often to find one in an antique shop or some such...

This tuba is with me now, and it is not for sale.
