They were definitely on. When they click, they are as tight as any US brass band I've ever heard.

The gap between second and third place was around 15 points. I would have like to have heard the second place band (Central Ohio), too, since the scores were fairly close.

The only band with a higher score in any class was the Fountain City Brass Band, who won the Championship section.

I would hate to be a championship section judge. In the test piece, it's not that difficult to rank the bands. With the optional pieces at the Gala Concert, I couldn't begin to distinguish between the top 4. They were all so superb that I could only sit there in awe.

By the way, if you've never heard Extreme Make-Over by de Meij, it's really ingenious. The tuned water bottle chords (sounds like a calliope) under a monstrous mallet solo is a hoot, as are the twists and turns on well-known orchestral themes.

Here's hoping that they will move up to the Championship Section next year. I'll bet that the other Honors section bands would appreciate it if they did move up!
