There was a great story on 60 Minutes last night about the power of Music Education in Venezuela. It was a great story on the transformative power of music that we could all stand to see!

I realize that this board may be a bit too crusty and cynical for such a positive spin, but here's the link anyhow! :?

Crusty? Cynical? What makes you say that? We're all extremely positive about everything. Then you go and post that silly story....Ok. I'm just kidding. :)

Yes, very inspiring program. Some more info is in this 60 Minutes story on Gustavo Dudamel. He speaks about bringing El Sistema to L.A.

Thanks for posting the link.
Makes me want to ~do~ something. Wouldn't it be awesome to bring a program like that to our local communities?

Also loved the snippet of "Roman Carnival". I last played that in 1982 - euphonium. The arpeggios at the end killed me. Great memories.

Not only does The System introduce music to lots of kids, but it also makes some pretty darn good musicians.
Sensemaya: Venuzualan National Youth Orchestra

Edicson Ruiz is another product of The System. He won a double bass spot with the Berlin Philharmonic when he was 18. Wow.

I was facinated by the news report last night. Does anyone know why they use basically a double orchestra? It would seem that two regular size groups could cover twice as much ground as one huge group.
