Mouthpiece reccomendation

I do not have a private teacher, and I play on a rotary tuba and am still using the schools mouthpiece.

I think I want to be a music major in college and need a mouthpiece.

What should I buy

Its the school horn, its pretty old. When I play a low C it is open and D is 4th valve. Its been the only tuba ive played on, i dont think it is b flat

There are as many opinions as to the proper mouthpiece for you as there are people signed up on this forum.

1) Get a teacher. If you can't get a teacher, at least contact a low brass professor or instructor at a nearby college or university and set up an appointment to have him assess your embouchure for help getting the proper mouthpiece for your stage of development.

2) If that fails, or there is noone to contact, email Matt @ Dillons or Roger Lewis @ WWBW and concisely set forth how you play, including what you do well and what you have trouble with. Then take their recommendations. This may involve a couple of email exchanges as you discuss your personal ergonomics so you can be properly fit.

3) You don't know how lucky you are to be playing a Alexander, even if it is one that has "personality," meaning if it has intonation quirks. If the horn has playability issues, like dents, sticky rotors or linkage, or something else, it is worth having it fixed, even if your school's budget is such you have to pay for it yourself.
