I was asked to play Tchaikovsky's 2nd symphony with a local orchestra. Anyone know how the tuba part is?

I just looked at it and it is pretty straightforward. There is really nothing except for a short accompanying melody.

I played it a few months ago. I really like this piece now (hadn't heard it before). The tuba part is definitely straight forward and very typical Tchaikovsky. Nothing as difficult as the stuff that shows up on auditions (his 4th and 6th symphonies for instance) but still a fun piece.

There might be a few tricky spots. there is an accompanying part of repeating up-beats with the trombones in the 4th mvt. Watch out for the ending, its FAST!!

Is it the original 1872 version or the revised version? I personally prefer the original version, but both are good. It actually may be my favorite Tchaikovsky symphony. Beautiful majestic, glorious last movement. Part isn't tricky, just bring air.

It is a fun piece to play. The Kalmus edition, as I remember it, has a page turn in the last movement where you have a few measures to quickly turn the page and then pick a middle C out of the sky and descend a two octave major scale. However, don't worry about it. When you don't see it coming, you will not have time to fear the entrance in advance. I never missed it.

For future reference, buy Mr. Torchinsky's book of Tchaickovsky's Symphonies and orchestral works. All of Mr. Torchinsky's books are valuable resources.
