I played an outdoor concert yesterday in some significant wind. I have a Peak stand I bought because of its portability, but the weight of the thing really helped with the wind. It doesn't have the Manhasset advantage of being able to put your foot on the leg of the stand to hold it down, but it didn't need holding down. I think it is about $30 at WWBW. It's possible that the bass drum was shielding me from some of the wind, but my music sure was blowing off if I didn't have it well-clothespinned, so I think the weight of the stand did help overall. I spent the entire first piece with the bell pushing the music down on the stand to keep it in place, before I got more clothespins on it. (Sightreading a concert on 3rd cornet, don't ask me how I get into these things.)

Several years ago being a muzzle loading addict, as bloke may become, I filled a couple of black cotton socks 2/3 full of #4 lead shot. They are a bit heavy to tote but with a couple of those on the stand legs you can worry about things other than the wind.

there's an extremely easy way to fix this cheaply. get yourself a shoelace or a bit of yarn, tie a loop at both ends. loop one end around the leg of your chair (or sit on it if your on the ground) and loop the other around the front peg (3 leg) of the stand. works much like a rock stop for cellos/basses. a sock with rocks/sand works nicely also. theres an easy way to also keep your music on your stand also. go to hobby lobby and pick up a piece of plexi-glass to put on top of your music. adds weight to the paper and allows you to see it. hope this helps!

Please forgive me for deviating from music stands but we never carry any paper (except a tunelist) onstage.
We played a new place right on the beach, "The Hangout" last Thursday. Wind was blowing a steady 30 mph with gusts to Lord knows what. The Hangout is huge (half a city block) with a bar/restaraunt, sandpit for the kids - complete with a tunnel, two tiki bars, and a large strolling area in front of the concert stage that shows surfer videos on a large screen right above where the band plays.
I was so glad tubenetter tbn.al helped me to get one of his two TubaTamers. My recording bell had to be sideways to the wind and my tuba mike had to be wrapped in a towel because the wind noise overcame the rubber screens.
We ran the tuba through two 300 watt JBL EONS on stands.
We ran everything else through two more EONS and had two EONs as monitors for us. I think we were the first band to play the Hangout that had enough P.A. to be heard.
