Sorry for the bother,
the piece shows upper and lower notes and says upper - trombone; lower - tuba. which do you play? do you do it american brass quintet style with the low voice on top or a traditional quintet set up with the tuba playing the lower part. thanks...

I play the lower notes, and leave out the 3-4 notes in the second mvt. in brackets.

just what we've landed with over the years, no "historical" thought process on it--it's what works for us to sound good.

On this piece and most music in general, a tuberist seldom goes wrong by taking the low road.
The instrument has such an enjoyable, rich sound in the lower range, the tuba player and most people around love to hear it get on down.

thanks guys! i'll give it a blow this afternoon. as far as gig music, i haven't heard the piece (unfortunately) nor have i looked at it for more than a couple minutes and for that matter, i didn't choose it (boo). is there any recordings you would recommend? thanks!

The Philip Jones Brass Ensemble "Greatest Hits" two CD collection has the Maurer on the 2nd CD: Four Pieces for Brass Quintet. The Bozza is also on the "Greatest Hits." Fletch's performance, as well as the entire quintet is exceptional!

This CD is in the library at Sam Houston. I also noticed it is available on Amazon for around $8. used.

I just performed this quintet for a competition and I played the lower notes. The judges seemed commented on it saying that they liked it that way.

The first time I heard these pieces recorded was by the Phillip Jones Brass Ensemble with John Fletcher on tuba. From what I can tell fromn the recording, Mr. Fletcher plays the lower notes. I have had these pieces in my quintet repertoire for 30 years and have followed Mr. Fletcher's example with much success.
