Need hard case advice

I need to get a hard case for my front-action York "monster" Eb bass ASAP...

Dimensions are:

Bell diameter - 19 1/2"
Height - 33"
Width at leadpipe - 18 1/2"
Largest width of body - 17"

Does anyone have any ideas where I can get an "off-the-shelf" case that will fit (and fit well)?

Thanks, Bob

Greg,

I am going to be travelling in less than two weeks. The reason why I need to scramble to find a case for my Eb bass is that, at this late time, I'm told that my large BBb bass, along with its Walt Johnson flight case, is too large and overweight (!) to make the flight.

An idea came to me that maybe a case for the new King 2341 might work? (From what can tell, they look similar in size and body style to the Eb York "monster"). Can anyone who owns (or have access to) one of these horns help me with some measurements?

MANY thanks, Bob

Check out the medium-sized MTS hard case, model 1207V.

Does great for my Besson 983, with similar dimensions to your eefer.

My King 2341 came with a hard case that I believe is sold by Taylor Music, http://www.1800usaband.com" target="_blank. I think it's a decent all around hard case but I'm not sure I would fly with it. The case is similar to the 1207V made by MTS (who knows, maybe MTS made it) but, having owned both, I think the MTS branded case is somewhat sturdier.

Who told you this? Is this the airline's policy, or someone with whom you're traveling? While most tubas in flight cases are overweight, many airlines have specific policies for oversize/overweight musical instruments. I just flew with Northwest, and while my flight case ended up being about 70-80 pounds all told, they simply gave me the specific "tuba" charge and took it anyway (yes, there are apparently different charges for each instrument... the woman at the counter made a comment about the prices for cellos also going up recently.). Unfortunately, the charge with Northwest was $100 each way. I've heard a lot of other airlines are more affordable (Southwest?).

I bought the MTS 1207V Medium case for my King/Gnagey horn. With the 20" monster Eb bell that it has, it fits perfectly in the case. :D

Charlie, I'd be happy to spend an extra $100 each way! I believe that the situation here may be a little different, because the destination is China. They are saying due to the horn's size, it must go as cargo or freight, and the cost is staggering!

Elephant,

Thanks for your post. According to new information, just received, the reason for the glitch is not due to the airline (Asiana), but that the airport has certain union rules as to treatment of oversized "baggage" - they need special equipment to handle them, so the price is jacked up substantially (or so I'm told). Anything over 64 combined inches in size (that is, length + width + height) and 50 lbs. is subject to this treatment. Has any of you encountered this situation?

In light of this new info, it seems the size of horn I bring is irrelevant, since anything I own will exceed this criteria (I have since discovered that the other tuba player, the baritone saxophone player, and all the percussionists are all in the same boat as I am).

Charlie, I passed on your info to the powers-that-be, and I am awaitng a reply.

Bob

I agree. I think that the 2341/5XJ case (the 1207V) is the way to go.

Yep, I had to pay $400 round trip to fly a 2341 in a Uni-tech flight case to New York. $100 for oversize, and another $100 for overweight. And the same coming back! And to make it even better, American Airlines LOST the tuba so I had to go through all that crap. Then i got a call from Mid-America Airlines saying that they had it.. and then it was shipped to my house a week later.

Bloke had some Conn 5xJ MTS-made cases in his attic. You might want to PM him to see if he has any more.
