Bruckner is great, but I get restless listening to live performances. Too long, and I have a fairly well-developed attention span. LIstening at home, when I can listen to one movement at a time, fine. Mahler, symphonies after the 1st I'm the same way. Lied, etc, great, any time.

Playing is a different story. Actually, I've never had the chance to play any Bruckner, but I'd do it in a heartbeat. Or several thousand.

Mahler is my very favorite composer (played to date symphonies 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6), while I really enjoy Bruckner (only played No.4 so far).

If you enjoy Mahler, I would suggest trying Shostakovich next - I have recently been getting well into his music (played symphonies 4, 5, 10 and 12 - No.6 scheduled next month :) )

Second the Shostakovitch remark. #5 is the bomb, the finale rocks my world.

Also, highly recommend the band or orchestra arrangements of his Prelude in Eb Minor.

Shostakovich, Bruckner, and Mahler are my three favorite symphony composers.

I love both.
Bruckner: 5, 8, and 9 are my favorites. If you like Bruckner check out Richard Wetz SYmphony No.3 and Kleist Overture.
Mahler: 2,3, and 6. 1 is ok, but nothing compared to Hans Rott's Symphony in E. Check it out, the finale will blow you away. And it doesn't have a tuba part :) That is by no means a requirement however.
Shostakovich: 2,4,7,8,11,13,15
Rachmaninov: Symphony No.1 is my favorite. Very much underplayed. Check out The Bells, and Aleko also.
Prokofiev: Absolutely anything. Especially Ivan the Terrible. I also really like The Meeting of the Volga and the Don.
Walton: Anything. Some of the most difficult parts in the rep, and quite possibly the most underrated composer in history.
Strauss: Anything at all. Check out Franz Schmidt's Symphony No.2 if you get into Strauss. WOW.
Respighi: Check out the Cincinnati SYmphony recording of Church Windows, and the Philharmoni Recording of Belkis The Queen of Sheba. DAMN.
If you're into obscure stuff...like me...Camargo Guarnieri Symphony no. 4 and 5. Great stuff. Brazilian Composer. Wicked tuba parts. Speaking of Latin musi with wicked tuba parts...anything by Revueltas. Just great music in there.

I would second that :)

 The Rott symphony is very nice, but to me sounds like an early unknown Mahler symphony, nowhere in the same league as Mahler 2, or 6 :D

Bruckner and Mahler are, in my view, a world apart. Bruckner is devout, and architural in structure, his music points you away from yourself and toward God.
Mahler, on the other hand is full of simpering sentimentality, and his music is enourmously self indulgent. Other than that they are both german, there is vrey little to link their musical language.
Of course people should listen to Mahler, but it is like a teenager who sees the world as revolving aound himself, but eventually you grow up and find more profound music elsewhere.

I was comparing Rott to Mahler 1. Which is not one of my favorite Mahler symphonies. And draws very much from the Rott. Mahler 2 and 6 are a different story. :)

If you want a very insightful and educational article on the differences/similarities between the two, read this article by Bruno Walter. Fun reading if you are interested. http://www.uv.es/~calaforr/walter.html" target="_blank

Just glanced so far, but looks an interesting article - thanks for the link! I have sometimes wondered when superficially their music is so different, that so many people who love the music of one, do the other as well.

Of course for us as tuba players, both provide very rewarding music to play.

Bob1062 wrote: The only Prokofiev I've played in a concert thus far has been the second piano concerto. No tuba, but it has the coolest part (bass trombone) with the least playing of any piece I've ever played. A low solo, an ff(f?) low B natural, unison descending stuff with the string basses (I was sitting right next to them too).
The Prokofiev 2nd Piano Concerto contains a tuba part IIRC. The 3rd and 4th do not.
