I was in the dixieland band playing on the balcony above you on your breaks. You guys played a ton that night. The White House aides sent us packing before 8:00, knowing that the WB was carrying the load.
You picked a good year. We got rained out tonight.

I remember the plastic tuba, but in spite of all the times I've seen the pics and read your posts about it here, I never drew the connection until now. Go figure. I am so
S-M-R-T. If you ever see the fella from the clarinet section, tell him that the clarinet player he heard on the balcony that night was Ron Hockett, who now plays with the Jim Cullum band in San Antonio. Ron was the principal saxophone in the Marine Band at the time, and ran the dixie group. Ron's playing is notable for the distinct absence of suck.
That's a nice set of pictures on that webpage. Still trying to find a good shot of that tuba. You need not have worried--you weren't the first tuba player who has "stepped on the grass" at the White House, and you weren't the last. Clear plastic tuba, you're the first. French-fried artichokes, numero uno. Stepping on the grass, not even close.
