I'm thinking this is more-or-less directed to those folks who either don't get out much... or... band directors who are strapped for cash for new horns for their band programs. I cannot imagine selling your horns to WWBW for store credit towards new instruments being competitive with selling your horn directly to an individual.

Now.... IF you could negotiate a deal by trading your horn for a specific new horn, I might be able to understand it. Something like trading your car for a new one. As we all know, those deals are usually not very good.

I got the e-mail as well, even though I'm not a band director and DO get out practically every night.

I checked it out 'cuz I've got a Besson New Standard I'm thinking of selling. You will get a bit more if you'll take store credit insteady in cash, but unless your horn's in excellent to mint condition (as they define it), neither amount comes close to what you could get selling the horn on consignment or in a private sale. (And, of course, the problem with store credit is you can't spend it anywhere else.)

The idea of this being directed at band directors is probably accurate. As an example, I have NINE bell front baritones (king, cleveland, conn, besson etc) at my middle school but I don't let the kids play them unless they are checking one out to take home and practice(or build a potato gun....musket). We use euphoniums that were bought over a period of several years. These baritones are sitting on a shelf and I cannot sell them outright. I could however, trade them in in order to buy other instruments for the program.

This sort of thing happens quite frequently to school band directors. I had a similar experience several years ago when our band got new uniforms. I needed the storage area that the old uniforms had occupied. When I asked if I could sell the uniforms, the answer was "no." I got the same response for giving them away. At least most of the time it is possible to do something similar to the subject of this post.

WWBW did this as a way of letting a person sell a horn to upgrade or, as has been stated, for band directors to clean out the closets. You have to remember (and I tell this to all my customers looking at trading instruments in on new equipment) - someone, somewhere needs to be able to make money for providing the service. This is money that you could get, if you sold it yourself. Even when I take a trade-in I let people know that my boss needs make a little on it and this is money they could have if they can sell it themselves.

I also try to put people looking for specific instruments in touch with people I know who are selling those instruments.

My job, as I see it, is to help the community and not try to sell every new tuba in the world.

im glad someone pointed this service out as it does spark a little bit of interest. they do carry thor's and i'm seriously considering putting a little cash into my horn and doing the store credit towards the new horn.

I'm surprised at the tone of some of the responses here.

I assume everybody knows that you get less for a trade-in than you would for selling yourself. The trade-off for that is less hassle, less uncertainty.

Some people choose that trade-off, some don't. No reason for rancor against a business offering that choice and option to its customers. The business, of course, expects to make some profit off the re-sale, but also assumes all the risk.
