question for tech-heads and geeks

Post by cjk »

A friend of mine has considered different places in his house to store his tubas. Some of them are convenient, but tend to be in the way. Others are out of the way, but inconvenient. Hanging them on the wall would begin to resemble a band room (or a hunter's trophy room...??).

He realized that his sunroom is right off his bedroom, and there is a ton of space down at one end of it. There is also a jacuzzi in the sunroom. His sunroom is rarely entered by anyone other than himself and his wife, and the tubas could easily be moved if a lot of activity were to occur there on a particular day.

HERE'S THE QUESTION:

Will water vapor with some chlorine in it do any sort of real/observable damage to silver plated finishes, lacquer finishes, or brass? A side note is that jacuzzi tubs are (A) covered when not in use and (B) contain very little chlorine - as whirlpool tubs employ additional methods to keep the water clean.

To me this seems like it's not such a good idea but I have no real technical background in chemistry, so I really can't say.

Does anybody know?

Thanks,

Christian
