Music for Euphonium and Orchestra, Roland Froescher

For those of you who do not yet know Roland Froescher, he is a consumate artist performing on euphonium. A student of Thomas Ruedi and Roger Bobo, Roland plays in Les Toubadours with Reudi, conducts the Brass Band Rapperswil-Wierzwil out of Bern Switzerland, is an artist on Ophecleide, and teaches euphonium at the Musikschule Region Gürbetal and the Hochschule der Künste Bern. Roland worked with York in 2006 to help develop the Preference and Eminence horns after Besson went into receivership and is now a York performing artist along with David Childs. In addition, Roland is a seriously nice person.
While I know Roland from his participation in NETEW, most euphonium performers in the US have not yet heard of Roland. However, you can get to know his euphonium playing since NAXOS just released Roland's first CD, Music for Euphonium and Orchestra.
Of particular note to me is Rolands performance of the Mozart Bassoon concerto. Like many euphonium players, I performed this as part of my education when I was a freshman in high school. Of course, my performance bore no resemblance to Rolands or for that matter what Mozart intended. Any student of the euphonium who performs this piece should consider Roland's performance to be mandatory listening in their education!
In addition to Mozart, Roland performs an original euphonium concerto by Dominique Roggen (who also conducts the orchestra) as well as a concerto by Balissat. To round out the album, Roland performs the von Weber Bassoon Concerto in Bb and is own arrangement of Tchaikovsky's Andante Cantabile.
This CD is Naxos catalog number 8.570725. Add it to the "must have" list in your euphonium library!
