I think it's a York Eb or F that someone decided didn't have enough valves so they rigged up some pipes and and connected an Eb sousaphone or tuba valve section without making them 1-3, 2-3, flat 1... ect. combinations.

It defiantly looks like it was cut down... cheaply. Notice the lack of ferrules on the tuba.

Or maybe it's the ultimate instrument for someone who still hasn't made up their mind for whether he likes front action or top action valves.

Anyway, it is indeed very cool looking and I wouldn't mind giving it a toot.

They are those rings that connect the tubes together. Example: Bell to bottom bow.

Ferrules are the best conventional way to make sure the joints are air tight and can withstand the inevitable bangs and bumps that a tuba will get without the solder joints weakening and leaking.

Regardless of the workmanship, I don't think anybody here is really getting how cool this horn is. Why can't we all just be positive and appreciate a neat idea for once?

I agree with Bob on this one.

When I muck around with an instrument, I do it on something that has little or no value and try to give it a good use.

Maybe this was just a cheap and relativity easy way to add a "1-3 combo" valve with minimal work.

But, I also think if it can play reasonably well, it'd be a blast to play.

What you don't seem to understand is that one man's cool is another's dumb.

I find the horn to be ridiculous, and not "cool" at all. Really, what's the point of having two valve sections? A neat idea? Sorry, a modern display of "over-the-top" excessiveness, yes...but not such a neat idea. I wouldn't show up at a gig with that beast, that's for sure.

It's funny you think that "nobody here is getting it." Why can't we all just accept that other people have different opinions for once?

Josh, without being disdainful of you opinion, why do you think it's cool? What do you like about it?

A big NASA decal on the bell would be cool. Really cool.

I just think that this horn is an interesting idea. We see 6-valve F tubas all the time, this is just a radically different take one. Furthermore, if I had to guess, I'd say that it's probably in Eb, and the only other 6 valve Eb I've ever even seen a picture of is the one on the Thein website.

As to how "good" the horn actually is, I'm pretty sure that whoever it is in the picture is the only person who could tell us the answer to that one. I was not trying to imply how it plays one way or the other. If I ever get to see this puppy in person, though, you can bet your socks that I'm going to ask to play it.

I've always been more of a minimalist guy, though. I think 2 rotaries on the side woulda been sweet.

Idea - okay (ish). Better to add BBb valves to an Eb, or CC valves to an F. Hold down one and three, and you can use the other set for a complete chromatic compass.

But I agree - chopping up a beautiful tuba like this is a criminal act (IMHO).
