I have a former student moving into an apartment tomorrow (MONDAY, August 11th). She needs a few bodies to help. (This is an updated date)

Can you please lend a hand? Pretty please?

WHY HELP? -
1. She is super nice and pretty, too.
2. She will be a Piano GA... and knows nobody in Georgia
3. She'll buy you food and beverages.
4. SHE CAN PLAY THE HINDEMITH
5.She's cool
6. It would be a personal favor to me... tubaland is a small world... I may be able to return the favor.

I'll Facebook my studio, but Band Camp starts tomorrow. Where will she be living? I teach until about 2:30, but might be able to make it for a little bit.

Great use of this forum! It truly is a community here on Tubenet. It's nice to see it worked out... and if she's gonna play the Hindemith for you, it was more than worth it!

I appreciate the spirit of this thread but take issue with the emphasis on her Hindemith abilities.

Is that truly *the* primary motivating factor?

Outside of academic tuba circles does anyone particularly care? It's really a piano not a tuba showpiece.

I hope her value as a human being extends beyond that. What message does this send to her?

I helped because it was the right thing to do.

If someone from our community would have asked if I could have helped a business major (or an uncle... or an astrophysicist) move in, I would have... because it STILL would have been the right thing to do.

I am 100% sure that Doug's mentioning of the Hindemith was mostly a humor thing for us tuba players. (i.e. we know that the Hindemith Sonate is extremely challenging, and if you have an in with anyone who can play it you have a definite resource in your pocket)

Also, having interacted with Dr. Zerkel on a few occasions in the last several years, he is a class act and would never help someone out solely based on what they could do for him.

The O.P. listed 6 or 7 points to try and encourage those in Athens to assist the lady in moving. One of those was an indication of her musical abilities.

Go Dave, Go Doug, glad all is well!!! Hope it wasn't too hot while you were out there working!

The message that it sends is that a former teacher cares enough about her to solicit colleagues who otherwise wouldn't know of her existence to give her a hand moving in, and is willing to go to any length to come up with ideas to get them lend a hand.

So why don't you back away from that keyboard and go see a proctologist, 'cuz as tight as you've got your sphincter clenched, one of these days you're gonna explode.

Well, that little disclaimer worked well, didn't it?

Joh_tuba merely expressed his opinion. If you disagree, fine...no need to gang-tackle him in the backfield.

He does, in my opinion, have a valid point...it's too bad that when asking someone for a favor most people now feel obligated to hang a carrot as a reward. Anyone remember a time when people helped just out of the goodness of their hearts? Or is that more of an ol' country boy kind of thing that is quickly disappearing in society today?

I don't think he meant to belittle you personally, Doug...I enjoy your posts and hope you use TubeNet more often. It's nice to have a professor (and a studio) of such superior quality in the region. Why don't you come down to Stillwater sometime...we can do a joint recital and throw back a few.
