Last month at the HPNWBBb here in Bellevue, WA., one of the two excellent clinicians was tubist Eugene Dowling (University of Victoria, B.C.). He handed out one page of mouthpiece buzzing exercises by his former teacher, Arnold Jacobs. This page, plus 18 more pages of short etudes, exercises, and text are found in the back of the Hal Leonard Advanced Band Method for Basses (Tuba), pub. 1963. The original 1963 price is $5.50. I bought it from sheetmusicplus.com for $5.95 plus shipping. What a steal! Get yours while it's still available.

These pages from the Hal Leonard book are reprinted in the back of Bruce Nelson's Also Sprach Arnold Jacobs.

My teacher assigns warmups out of the Advanced method, from the back, with the Jacobs' etudes. I like that they are right back there, didn't cost any extra.

Went back into my old stuff. Those pages are there, and the cover on my copy says US $3.50.

I'm still using that Hal Leonard book. Funny how an old method book thread just popped up... I ran across my old Rubank Advanced method book a few nights ago. Playing duets with my teacher out of that book got me started.

I'll still use both volumes of Eby's Scientific Method. I beleive the total cover price for both my voluems is less that $5. And yes, I did buy them new and I guess I am that old... if I only could remember...

I'll second the Rubank Advanced Method. I love the fact it's a mini-lesson if you follow each of the prescribed units in the front of the book: scales, articulation, melodic etudes, etc. I've been working on Volume 1 for a few years now, should crack Volume 2 soon. This is of course in addition to Arban, Kopprasch, etc. People sometimes give me funny looks when I'm warming up out of Rubank at community band, but how many of them could play any exercise in there flawlessly? Maybe one in ten.

I'm using Rubank currently as a teaching aid for an adult colleague who has never had any formal instruction in playing the tuba. It keeps the lessons focused and right on time. We work on other stuff time permitting.

I'm going to order the Hal Leonard also...
