Dear Friends,
Here's the notice from the Berkshire Eagle describing Saturday afternoon's (8/23/08) events, including, "for the artistically inclined, hands-on, tuba-themed crafts," and (for the non-artistically inclined) Tubby the Tuba, with Mike Roylance, tuba solo, David Tripp, narrator, (he's the son of Paul Tripp, who wrote and narrated the story in the 1940's) and our Cupcake Philharmonic Orchestra bulked up with BSO virtuosi to cover all the named instruments. Other ringers include Mark Churchill, Dean of the New England Conservatory of Music on cello, Marylou Speaker Churchill, Professor of Violin at NEC, and 2 duffers, Carolyn M. Newberger, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, and Eli Newberger, piano, celeste, and conducting motions. The repertory includes 2 arrangements commissioned especially by the BSO for Mike, "Kindertunenlieder," a delicious mash-up of "Pop Goes the Weasel," some Bachian counterpoint, "We're Off to See the Wizard," "I've Been Working on the Railroad," etc., etc., etc., and for tuba solo, a sweet setting of "When You Wish Upon a Star." To close, Mike and Eli will play Howard Frazin's 2 tuba tribute for Mike and Amanda Roylance's older daughter, "Lullaby for Amelia."
Berkshire Eagle, 8/20/08
"When 'Tubby the Tuba' was first performed over 60 years ago, little did composers Paul Tripp and George Kleinsinger realize that their musical creation would become a beloved mainstay of the orchestral repertoire for children and endure into the next century.
"There have been film versions and numerous audio recordings, including a memorable version with the legendary Arthur Fiedler conducting the Boston Pops and narration by that inimitable chef, Julie Child.
"On Saturday at 2:30 p.m., the BSO will present the piece at the annual Family Concert in Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood, performed by the Cupcake Philharmonic Orchestra — a chamber ensemble formed especially for family programs — along with members of the BSO.
"BSO principal tuba, Michael Roylance, will play the lead role, and David Tripp, son of the original composer, will narrate.
"On crisp summer mornings, the strains of Roylance practicing his tuba can be heard wafting across the dew-soaked lawns of the Tanglewood festival grounds. At the concert, the talented tubist will help young listeners hear for themselves how Tubby the Tuba finally found his song, in a welcoming, youth-centered environment.
"Before the concert, starting at 1 p.m., junior audience members can visit a "petting zoo" on the porch and get to know an array of orchestral instruments from woodwind and brass to percussion and strings.
"As they try out a trumpet, blow a French horn, bow a violin, or tinkle a glockenspiel, who knows what natural musical talents might reveal themselves!
"For the artistically inclined, hands-on tuba-themed crafts will take place under the tent at 1:30 p.m.
"Tickets to the concert (including all activities) cost $10, with children under 12 admitted free. Information: http://www.tanglewood.org" target="_blank, (888) 266-1200.

This sounds like a fantastic program.

Having just relocated back to "Red Sox Nation", I am going to try to convince the wife to go with the little one. I have my fingers crossed!
