In one month I am off to China for 3 weeks touring around with my Chinese girlfriend. I am currently planning the trip itinerary. Has anyone come across a store/shop in China selling tubas I might visit?

Anywhere else of tuba/musical interest you suggest I visit?

Offhand, I don't know anything like that. Perhaps call/e-mail Roger Lewis or Matt Walters? They both retail Chinese instruments and might be able to get you some contacts.

Thinking about getting a Chinese horn to bring home? If you go to a factory, you might be able to pick through a bunch of horns and get a good one.

Enjoy yourself. Is your Chinese girlfriend a native Chinese speaker? That would be handy!

No, not serious about buying one to bring home - I have quite enough tubas already!

Yes, my girlfriend is a native Chinese speaker.

I was in Beijing for about a month in 2005 - never found a music store, but I wasn't a great neighborhood for wandering and I didn't really get a chance to do any serious exploration anyway. I remember hearing that the tuba was instrumenta non grata for quite a while over there while Mao was alive - his wife hated them for some reason. Good thing your lady friend speaks Chinese - stay on real good terms with her so she keeps you out of the pokey.
