Courtesy of Spike Jones 'City Slickers'. Anyone know who the tubist is? Hank Stern? 'Country' Joe Washburne? Roger Donnelly?

ROGER Donely, maybe...I have an email to an email acquaintance who should know. Country Washburne didn't really appear with the band except on audio recordings, was more an arranger and other background stuff as far as I've known. I've seen the pigeons coming out of the tuba, that definitely was Donely, and I think this is him.
According to Don Ingle, from the DJML, whose dad played with Spike Jones (Red could belch a perfect Eb on command, that's part of the reason he got the gig) and with Country Washburne says that's Washburne.
Well hell's bells. Although he certainly didn't seem positive, but Donely's horn was never quite so dented, according to Don, while Country's certainly was.
Kind of a strange method of ID, but I'll accept it.
The tuba-player is indeed Joe 'Country' Washburne.
My friend Jim Washburn (no terminal 'e') is his nephew, and he says:
"That is definitely my Uncle Joe. I've got hard copies of that photo in my archives."

I pulled that photo off that popular auction site. The thing that struck me most about the picture is that the third valve knuckle is almost smashed flat and there is some sort of tag hanging from the horn... like maybe it was just a movie prop. I really doubt if a pro would have been actually playing that horn.
