Well done to the Chicago Symphony playing Mark-Anthony Turnage Chicago Remains and Mahler Symphony No.6 at the Royal Albert Hall, London yesterday evening! I thought it was an excellent performance and no trouble hearing the tuba played by Gene Pokorny :)

It was broadcast live on BBC4 TV and when at the end Bernard Haitink individually stood up Mr. Pokorny for applause it was nice for the commentator to say
applause for the Great tuba player of the Chicago Symphony, Gene Pokorny

I do not ever remember a tuba player getting such special mention before!

Although not wanting to spoil anyone's fun, before this thread degenerates too far, I will reply.

If I am not mistaken that is one of the two legendary York 6/4 CC (#2?) - the tuba on which some modern large tubas are based.

At the CSO's last European Tour Mr. Pokorny played with a Yamayork.... maybe it's the same...

Don't the "Jake Yorks" have that little dogleg tuning slide feature in their respective leadpipes?

It's one of the Yorks.

And no, the Yorks don't have a leadpipe tuning slide.

The last time I heard the CSO in London (was that January this year Johnathan?) Mr Pokorny was using a York.
I remember being surprised he'd travel with such a damageable/irreplaceable instrument...

Maybe he's secretly hoping it will be destroyed.

I saw this concert on the Beeb as well. Thanks for the heads-up, Neptune!

(and the fish & chips experience in London, too!) :D

It was good to meet you UncleBeer! :)

I hope the Messiaen went well? My own Mahler 6 was well received although my lips were done in after doing that and Pines of Rome

Why not? How else are you going to see your music while marching?

I did notice a euphonium :)

You're right! What was I thinking!?! :tuba:
Doesn't the YamaYork come with an optional fiberglass recording bell and strap rings?

Bob1062 wrote:Cool. I remember hearing a piece of his a few months back entitled "Blood on the Water" on the radio, and I seem to recall it having a bit of low woodwind stuff.
Just watched the Turnage again and it has 2 contrabassoons and 2 bass clarinets, plus the saxophone (?) as in the picture.

I have also included pic of the low brass complete with euph.

Not really my sort of music, but interesting to hear all the same.
