I have just watched recording of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra's concert at the Proms including Sibelius 2.

Anyone recognize the model of tuba played? Sounded good on the recording!

Wild guess: HB2p or HB21.That bass trombonist doesn't look particularly "youthful"..

I believe the age limit is 25 or so for the GMYO. Definitions of youth may vary.

I played for a German "Youth" Orchestra when they came to the states and couldn't bring their tuba player. The age limit is something like 25 and most of these groups have some solid players. I enjoyed the little bit of time I spent with the one I played with.

In regards to the horn. I don't know. However, with no offense intended to the OP, I really don't get the "horn sounded great" comments. This kid deserves much more of the praise then the several pounds of sheet brass resting in his lap. One of my old students played a Conn 20J in the local youth orchestra, and sounded (IMO, to my biased ears) better than the other two kids with new-fangled (and upright bell) tubas. His horn was old and beat, but he sounded great playing it.

Sorry if my wording sounded like I was not praising the player - I certainly intended it as a compliment! Obviously any tuba only gives out, what is put in by the player.

And yes,different tubas have different sounds,which is a topic of great interest here on Tubenet,including to me...So,IMO,a valid question.
