Projection of smaller Euphonium bells?

I seem to remember reading a post somewhere, that one of the euphonium players from one of the major military bands, chose a smaller belled euphonium for band, because it seemed to "cut through" better than the instrument with larger bell. (I believe it was two models of the same brand....maybe Yamaha?)

Does this sound familiar to anybody? I can't seem to find the post anywhere.

Any help would be appreciated!

Don Palmire (US Army Pershing's Own) wrote that the Yamaha 642 seemed to cut better above the band than the newer Yamaha 842. But those both have the same size bell (within 1/4 inch). Not sure this is what you heard though.

That may be it!

Do you happen to know which thread that info appeared in?

Besson makes both a 967 and a 968. The 968 has the smaller (11") bell. You may be able to find more info on their page that describes the horns.
