This one is also on top of my list. The Brits saved some troubles of making bows by designing their BBb tubas with extremely long straight branches. Fits well with upright bells, but becomes ugly and impractical with front bell instruments. Cuts down the player’s viewing field in marching as well as in seated playing.

This obviously was about cashing in on the American market, which is sort of legit, but created no beauties.

You know, anybody who has seen any of my posts over the years here on TubeNet knows what a great fan I am of Besson 3-valve comp tubas. But for C and B nat occasionally being stuffy, for me they have the best intonation and rugged package of any tuba made. I've never been one to inhabit well the muddy bottoms of the trenches, the near and real pedal tones, so for me my 3-banger with tuned exhaust is still my favorite, even though for a lot of other gigs the conductors and directors prefer the 186, so I give them what they want.

That said, the Besson detachable recording bell variant is a travesty. With the different bell geometry it doesn't play the same, you can't see around it, and the leadpipe is in a most uncomfortable position. Why Miraphone and Besson ever thought they had to "compete" with the American bell front tubas, such as the Conn 2XJ's, the King 1240/41 old style, the Reynolds Contempora "Recording Bass," the Martin, etc., I'll never know. But, because of that I did get my 186 really, really cheap, with both an upright retrofit bell as well as the stock recording bell.

I have seen one of these Besson recording tubas with an upright conversion. Still had the same huge detachable bell but pointing straight up. It looked good because the long top bow extended all the way up right underneath the bell

Here I am with an ex-tuba locally known as "Allen's Eb dent-o-phone." Photo taken at a Halloween party. The plastic sunflower growing from it adds, I think, an appropriate touch.

This instrument is used during Boston TubaChristmas for holding the money we collect every year for a local charity. Instead of "pass the hat," it's "pass the tuba."

Just out of my curiosity, is that a 6/4 Rudy Meinl CC in the picture? I have always wondered that, and have always wanted to play on the 6/4 Rudy....regardless that is one BAT.

If that's a Rudy, it's a Bb. Look at the tuning slide. Besides, did Meinl ever call any of their C tubas a "6/4"???

Isn’t this the CCC that Paxman made for Hoffnung?

For years stored in a basement, where the walls were changed, so that the bell had to be cut to allow for the tuba to be moved.
