Well here are some pics of me with the 1921 rebuilt Conn 40K Sousaphone from Harv. I used it in last weeks game. And with my new-old King 26 mouthpiece I just recently bought, this horn was a BEAST! Also Harvey if you are reading this, please post pictures of the 4 valve 20K you are building! We are all very interested.

Heh, heh, heh! Taking care of a 38K myself, I'm right there with you. It's absolutely great, isn't it! Harv did a great job on it. Now I'm going to have to get the dents out of the one I play.

Not just the pedal tones, but everything about a 38K/40K is huge.

What mouthpiece do you use on it? On mine I use a Kelly 18 with a piece of lead golfer's tape wrapped around the throat, and I'm getting a PT82 to use indoors.

Yep everything about the 38K/40K is huge. I love mine. I have been using a Helleberg on it and it worked great with it. But i just recently switched to an old King 26. It has a deeper cup and larger throat which makes a HUGE sound and its less blatty. The King works better for the type of playing I do.

I believe a King 26 has a more rounded cup, which for that horn will indeed do exactly what you're looking for. Great!

Our band is 220 people, and 13 sousaphones..all on big bore Conns. We can (and have) over power the whole band if we wanted to. But the 40K is definately a beast. Especially in the low range.

I also have a King 26 mouthpiece that came with my 1241 King that I bought back in 1972. I use it occasionally and am always surprised at the quality and power of the sound that old mouthpiece can produce. (I just find the rim a little too thick and rounded for my taste.) Although it is not a funnel configuration, it does have a deep cup.

I may be wrong, but it is my understanding that when King stopped manufacturing the King 26, Bach came out with the 24AW that is modeled after the 26. I also have a 24AW, and it does feel and play almost identical to the King 26, although they look quite dissimilar on the outside, except for the thick rounded rim.

I thought the King 26 had a deeper cup than most mouthpieces. Just by finger judgement, I compared the king with a Pt-48, and the King had a deeper cup. Could be wrong though.

I also could be wrong. However, just curious, have you critically compared your King 26 and your 24AW in your Conn 40K? If so, I would be interested in your observations/thoughts.
