Collier Jones, "Four Movements for Five Brass"

Post by Chase »

Hello all.
I'm looking for a recording of Collier Jones' "Four Movements for Five Brass". Anyone know of one? I know this piece was a favorite of the New York Brass Quintet, but haven't been able to find out if they (or anyone else) have recorded it. I played the piece with a University of Arizona brass quintet that played a festival in Greece a few years ago, and would just love to hear the piece again. If you have a recording or something from a recital, I'd love to hear that as well.
Thanks!

Bloke,
Many thanks for the referral to Dr. Schuesselin. I have emailed him and hope to hear from him soon. I am very glad this piece is still being played. When I played it not too long ago and did some research on it, I got the impression that it was nearly forgotten. Not only was the piece nearly forgotten but it seemed that Collier Jones himself had nearly been forgotten within the music community as well. I assume this is because he was, by profession, a lobster fisherman and not a musician. Somehow, Victor Ewald seemed to escape the fate of being forgotten, even though he was not a professional musician by trade. Didn't mean for this thread to go beyond discussing recordings of this, but any thoughts? Is our memory in the music world determined by whether we decide to be a musician "for a living" or "as a hobby" (I'm sure many of us know of Ewald, despite his not being a professional composer). Are we more likely to be forgotten if we do something besides music to make a "living", even if we produce an output of very high quality? What other artists have been very successful in music but have decided to make their livelihood in other areas?
