A very good design. I own one of these little tubas and it has great intonation and a big sound for its' size.

This model horn has been sold as Cerveny/Amati for some time. It's a very decent horn but I never heard of it refered to as a Piglet previously. I used one once, not bad.

Piggy's are usually in another playing category altogether.

What are the physical dimensions of this horn? How does it compare to the "Piggy", in size & playing characteristics?

Piggy = .827 bore
Piglet = .795 bore

Piggy = vertical main slide
Piglet = rear-pull main slide

The bell stack on the Piglet looks longer than the Piggy. That might suggest an even more compact wrap to the piglet. That thought is backed up by the fact that the 1st valve slide is as tall as the top bow of the Piglet, but is considerably lower on the Piggy:



First differences that jump out at me. That, and a $1700 price difference...

I'd like to hear more about height and weight.

I'd also like to hear more about sound. Why is it "in another league" from the Piggy?

It looks like Cerveny is no longer making these. Anyone know why?

I spoke with Matt this morning and he had a lot of good
things to say about this tuba and said he would like to
get some more in stock but they might have a smaller bell.
Anyway, it looks like a good fit for an old fart like me.
I eagerly await its arrival sometime next week.

I've actually had several phone calls about the Cerveny "Piglet". From bell to bottom bow it is only 32" tall. It's a nice playing horn. If I had a real need for a light, in-tune, compact CC tuba with lost of guts, it would have been mine first.
If you want to have fun looking at different Cerveny tubas, you have to check out the links in 'Ceska' instead of English.
Go onto http://www.amati.cz" target="_blank" target="_blank website and practice in English.
Then, find the 'Ceska' links in the same place. You will have to do some scrolling. The first "TUBY" you get to will be under Amati Piston tubas. Scroll down and you will find the rotor links. They show a lot more pictures in 'Ceska' than they do in English. They refer to the "Piglet" as ACB 483-40. Basically it is a striped down (minimal nickel silver and engravings) CCB 683. Maybe this needs a new post. We'll get some more on order. This one had a 15.75" bell instead of the 14.17" bell they say it comes with.

as the F helicon looks like it requires a much
leaner player than I am .....

Does anyone have experience with the 686? The 5 valves look interesting, but one would have to order it special.

I owned a Cerveny 686 4-valve for a couple of years. Wonderful horn!! I really didn't need to sell-it, but I happened upon a nice B&S,(vertical main slide), 6-valve at a good price so I did. The Cerveny seemed to be easier with accepting a dent with either softer or thinner metal. Also the Cerveny 686 is probably more "similar" to the Miraphone 186 than the B&S.

I think the real Cerveny piglet would be the CFB653......I'm sure I'll get a second on that from someone in here.........

I'll second that one, Brooke. And what a wonderful piglet she is!!!! Plenty of oink when you want it.

I like the look of the little used BBb on Dillon's site, though. If I were in the market for a BBb, I would have to give it a try.
