solo: tuba and organ?

Any good ideas for this? I'm primarily looking for something to put at the end of a recital that's going to be already hard on the chops...

I would also be interested in solos for euphonium and organ as well. I suppose any info on 'neat' solos for tuba (euph) and organ would be great, but something easy on the face would be especially appreciated.

thanks!

My teacher just played(like 30 minutes ago) the Chorale Fantasy for Tuba and Organ, Op. 93 by Jan Koetsier. It's a pretty cool piece to end a recital with.

I second the Koetsier. It is a lot of fun to play, and a real crowd-pleaser. I put it at the end of a recital myself, and it went over real well. Great piece!

Might be hard to find anymore, but many years ago I performed the Leo Sowerby Chaconne with organ. I don't know if it was originally intended for that instrument, but it was quite nice and sounded better than with piano. YMMV.

You might think I'd be nuts for doing it, but I once got a very pleasing result from Mozart 3 with organ. In particular the 2d Movement smoothed out and the organist provided some really nice colors with her registration. She is now long passed to glory, and I have no idea how to ask anyone to duplicate what she did, but it was special.

Handel: "The Trumpet Shall Sound" bass aria from The Messiah. Any church organist probably knows it inside and out. Just read it straight out of the book as a bass soloist would, at pitch on Euph and 8vb on tuba. Glorious, majestic piece when done well; range is moderate and nothing too technical (just take a BIG breath before the long slurs.) If needed I can send you an edited transcription for tuba in Finale format. In the key of D, sits well on BBb or CC tuba. (My favorite horn to have played it on was a Mirafone 190 BBb with a C4 mouthpiece - just perfect for that piece - direct, huge, focused, colorful sound.)

"The Trumpet Shall Sound" would also be an excellent choice if you have access to a really fine pic player. Come to think of it - I wonder if that has been tried as a quintet piece??

Yes, if memory serves me correctly I played a version a long time ago that had the trombone playing the vocal line. Tuba, obviously, played the bass line. It was just ok. Alot of work for little or no audience interest. Was a pretty good group, too.

Hmm, sounds like a worthy project then. Can't do much worse, right?

The Koetsier is indeed a great tuba/organ piece...easy on the chops for a concert ender, however, IT IS NOT!

I think that was, "Celestial Keys". It was performed by Jay Hunsberger at SRTEC (I think on his Alex-F). I think it's a bit long (~12 mins - 4 mvmts) for a finale, but it is a nice work.

Here's a link with more info:

Has mp3 file (full length) and pdf samples of score and tuba part.

Check out this website. If you scroll down it tells you a bit about the piece. I own this, and having yet to rehearse it with organ find it to be a pretty cool piece!
You can also google it and find some info about Randy Monthgomery (for whom it was written). It is a very inexpensive aqcuisition and has very moderate demands.
