I like it for the story you tell. Yes, there is room for improvement, but as you are a student I guess that is what your life is about right now.

And this grumpy old teacher of course wants to ask whether you aren’t making things a bit too difficult for yourself. The tuba you are portraied with is large for this concert. And then it is left handed!

Remember, James, music performance is a communication medium.

I certainly enjoyed your recording, and if you played on a small F tuba, I am impressed by your sound. I had a strong suspicion that you played a larger tuba.

The story teller thing comes from my contacts with the jazz scene. One inspiring pianist, teacher, composer, bandleader said (in my translation to English): If you don’t tell a story through your playing, you will be boring to listen to.

Even before that I had told my own students, that music is a conveyor of human thoughts and sentiments. If you have nothing on your mind while playing a piece of music, you will convey nothing, and your listeners never will find out why you play that music. Dance music shall make feet move and sad music shall make tears flow.

You made me listen despite the crack and some lines not carried through with sufficient surplus of technique and stamina. I do not take the recording as a statement of a finished development, but as a report from a from an interesting development.

Apparently you have worked much more with the Russian concerto in one movement, which I found better played.
