You might enjoy this unusual 1987 video of Tubby the Tuba that features Mayor Mann of the City of Newton giving the key to the city to basketball star Kevin McHale, and then proclaiming that the treasury would be open immediately after the performance. (I got one, too!) The video doesn't capture the clamor when Kevin walked onstage, but trust me, it was deafening. So, too, was the crowd scene before the morning rehearsal. Kids were running through the halls of the high school, looking for the classroom where the guests were sequestered before being rushed into the auditorium. In the end, it was a delight to perform in the glow of a genuine sports celebrity, and a nice guy to boot.
