What is the standard distance(steps) between hashes on a Highschool football field?

Our drill sheets have shown 28 between hashes on the sheets themselves, and our field (we make every year on empty spot @ highschool) we made em 28 apart like our sheets.

Today we practiced at the jr high (where the football field they p lay games is and we were having problems with people lining up and being off.

We then discovered the hashes are 20, yes 20 steps apart?

Which is right? as you can imagine this wuld cause quite a bit of chaos.. The lines were just repainted last week, and there hasnt' been a game played on em yet.

So what is the correct distance?

in texas... hashes are twenty 8-5 steps for both high school and college. NCAA marks them at twenty for all colleges. most high schools outside texas are twenty eight 8-5 steps

Scholastic hashes are 28 8 to 5 steps apart (high school)
Collegiate hashes are 20 8 to 5 steps apart (college and DCI)
and I think Professional (like NFL fields) hashes are 12 8 to 5 steps apart (i don't know who marches these hashes)

what I thought phoenix..

as u can imagine, it will/doese cause problems when u have a highschool band marching on a 28 step practice field then is thrown on a 20 step one.

not sure what were gonna do bout friday..

wonder if they got some green spray paint..to cover the old hashes..

When my high school band does the BOA (Bands of America) Competition every year, this year at Rutgers University, they put yellow tape down where the scholastic hashes are supposed to be. They may do that for you as well. Let's hope anyway...

I can't say how many different versions of "standard" football fields I've marched on...

We knew our spots well enough that the visual staff could scout out the field beforehand and tell us which markings were off, where the numbers were painted, etc., and we could adjust as necessary.

I haven't yet heard that high schools were going to the 32-20-32 side-hash-side distances, though. I'm surprised that the junior high's field was painted like that.

You'll have time to adjust. In the meantime, it'll help if you put both sets of hashes on your own practice field, too.
